History of The Cufflink
In the early 17th century, men wore shirts with holes at the sleeves where they tied ribbons and string to hold them together. During this period men started using chains with buttons at the end which was how early cufflinks were made and worn.
Eventually this new style become so popular, men all over the country started using different materials and styles. Chains were replaced with rods and everyone wanted to wear cufflinks. When the industrial revolution hit in the early 19th century, it was a casual accessory for men and more men in various parts of society started to wear cufflinks.
How To Wear Cufflinks
The swivel cufflinks are the most common type of cufflinks today and is what you should start with if you’ve never worn cufflinks before. They are easier to put on compared to other cufflink types. The button or the side that shows on your sleeves is the attached by a small stud that pivots. It looks like a T shape when opened. All you have to do is align the holes in your sleeves, open up the cufflink (T) and thread the stud through your sleeves. Once you’ve pushed the cufflink stud through both sleeves and flip the pin downwards so that it locks in the sleeves.
