History of Socks

Through history, socks have evolved from the earliest model which was made of animal skin to 100% wool which is what we commonly use today. In early 8th century BC, socks were made from animal hair and worn commonly in Ancient Greece. They also used woven fabric in various patterns showing of their weaving skills.

Socks evolved in Europe during the 5th century AD and were called 'puttees.' They were worn mostly by holy people to symbolise their purity. In 1,000 AD socks were worn only by the wealthy and noble. Finally in the 16th century socks became a common piece of clothing worn by most people.

The knitting machine which was invented in 1589 made it possible for socks to be worn more often and sold cheaper because it was six times faster to knit a sock compare to hand knitted ones. The final evolution of the sock took place in 1938 with the introduction of the nylon sock.
