The Coffee Table

The first coffee tables appeared in Europe, late into the Victorian era during the 18th century. Prior to this there were only centre tables, end tables and occasional tables. During this time, tea was the most popular drink and the demand for tea tables grew (Tea tables were higher than coffee tables). The high backed settees were the common sofa but when the style changed to the low back sofas the coffee table was invented. However, the coffee tables were placed behind the sofa and used to place books, coffee and tea.

Once the industrial revolution occurred coffee tables were more frequently in use and cheaper to make. Coffee tables were made from wood and in mass production. In today’s coffee tables, we have such a variety of styles and materials used to reflect our past and various types of designs.
