What Is Rattan Furniture?

Rattan (Malay for rotan) is a type of palm that is native in Africa, Australasia and Asia. Rattan is not a tree but rather vine like that grows over other vegetation because they need structural support as they can't stand on their own. Out of the 100 species of rattan only 20 are used to make furniture. Rattan is mostly harvested in Malaysia because they are one of the world's experts in finding and harvesting Rattan. Once harvested Rattan is treated to remove any sap, next its chemically treated and then left in steamed chambers to improve their flexibility.

Rattan is used to make various types of furniture and are very durable. Rattan is also commonly used to make baskets. In today's furniture industry Rattan is used to make outdoor furniture and even themed indoor furniture. They look great, are durable and can be made into almost any shape and size.
